Family Recipes
Just like every other preschooler, my son is completely taken with Frozen, b
ut he also loves Ratatouille, the movie about a rat who wants to be a chef. I thought it would be a good idea for us to make ratatouille the central dish in the movie.
My son was taken with the idea. He already had some of the figurines from the movie. What better way to spend an afternoon?
Fortunately, Deb Perelman from Smitten Kitchen recreated the recipe from the movie for ratatouille.
On tasting the dish, my reaction was much like Anton Ego’s, the hard to please food critic: It brought back memories of the ratatouille my mother made for us as a child.
It’s hard to compete with a memory, but that is pretty much the best compliment you can give a dish. I can only hope somewhere down the line my son will say, “Wow, that’s just like the ratatouille my dad used to make.” Or he could also say, “That’s Remy’s ratatouille,” the rat from the movie.
I’ll hope for the former.
